Why Your Cat Won’t Use His Litter Box

Without doubt, the biggest complaint of cat owners I know is having a cat that decides she doesn’t want to use her litter box. Besides that awful smell of cat odor throughout your house, there is the added cost of ruined rugs and the humiliation when friends and family stop by.

Thing is, cats are naturally clean animals and so you need to do some investigating to see what is going to reveal why your cat won’t use the litter box and would rather pee on everything else.

One of the main reasons cats stop using their litter box is simply – cleanliness. How often do you clean the box? While one cat may tolerate once a day, others may insist the box be cleaned each time they use it. We ended up getting a self-cleaning litter box – but they can be expensive. If cost is an issue, then try cleaning the box more often and see if this helps. If a simple scooping of the box each day can help stop the cat pee in the house, wouldn’t it be worth that little extra effort?

Another possible reason your cat has stopped using the litter box is the litter itself. Have you recently changed litter brands? Most cats prefer the brand they are used to. This doesn’t have to be the most expensive; some actually prefer the cheaper brands. If you find a litter that seems to make your cat happy, stick with it.

A more important reason a cat may stop using his litter box is illness. A quick trip to the vet to have your cat checked for possible feline urinary track infection could be in order. A cat with this infection may feel pain upon elimination and associate that pain with the litter box. It’s always a good idea to have your cat checked out whenever this is a sudden change in habits.

Keep in mind that most cats will not stop using a litter box once trained. That pretty much means that if your cat DOES stop using her box, she is trying to tell you something. Find the cause by eliminating things one by one. Both you and your cat will be happier for the effort – and, best yet, your house will no longer smell like cat urine.

Welcome back to my site all about Cat Odor. When we last left on I was telling you about my friend Jill and we had just figured out how to stop the kitties from using the bathroom in places other than the litter box. Today, I want to show you exactly how you can remove cat odor from your home permanently without spending a fortune on high dollar products some of which don’t even work.

The major cause of cat odor is cat urine that has had a chance to dry in your carpets, walls, and furniture. In order to get rid of the odor you first have to get rid of the cause. To do that we need to remove any cat urine stains that can be found around the house. Before we get started you’ll need to make sure you have the following items:

Paper Towels

Sponge

White Vinegar

Warm & Cool Water

Small Measuring Cup

Small Bowel

Store Bought Odor Remover

Five Easy Steps to Remove Cat Odor

Using cool water, damped your sponge and blot the effected area

Use your paper towels to blot away any excess moisture

Mix 2 cups of warm water and 1 tbsp of white vinegar in your bowel

Dab your mixture on the stained area

Sprinkle your store bought cat odor product on the cleaned area

The reason that most cat odor products fail is because they are only trying to mask the problem. With time they will stop working and that familiar smell will come back but the smell is the least of your worries. Cat’s have keener senses of smell than we humans so and they are extremely territorial by nature. In some cases if a cat can detect a scent of cat urine it will attempt to remark those areas meaning that not only will you have more cat odor to worry about but your property is going to be damaged.

By following the steps above to first remove the source of the cat odor and then using a good store bought product on top of it you will have not only removed the odor for now but you will have removed it permanently.

The majority of pet owners have at one time or another felt frustrated by the pet owner experience. It is nothing to be ashamed of, it is perfectly natural. Most of us with children even get frustrated with them but we love them none the less and the same is true for our pets.

Cats are a tricky bunch to keep up with at times and cat urine sure STINKS, but if you abandon certain duties you are going to end up with a cat odor problem. When your kitty friend won’t pee in her litterbox, your house will end up with a STRONG stench of cat odor – it’s horrible and embarrassing.

Keep reading and learn my story about getting rid of cat odor in the house for good.

I once had a good friend; well we are still friends actually, but anyway she had this cat that would never go to the litter box. She would go on and on about how much she loved the thing but she was considering getting rid of it because of the foul cat odor it was causing. I asked her if she could think of anything that would make the cat not want to use the litter box and she said no, of course not. Now, being an animal lover I couldn’t stand the idea of a cat going to the pound to be put down (because we all know that is what ends up happening) over a bathroom issue so I agreed to stop by one day after work and try to figure it out with her.

So after work I stopped by as I had promised to do and she wasn’t kidding one bit. The stench of cat odor hit me in the face the moment I walked in the door. I asked her to point me toward the litter box which she did and instantly I knew what the problem was. She had placed the cats food and water bowls right next to the kitty litter. Now, stop and think, would you like to eat in the same area you defecate in? I didn’t think so and neither does your cat. They want their eating and drinking area to be clean and will often find other less visible areas to do their business rather than dirtying up their dinner area.

I explained all of this to my friend and she was relieved. She admitted that she had never really wanted to take the animals to the pound but she just didn’t know what else she could do about her cat odor problem. I told her I understood and thanked her for giving me a chance to try to get to the root of it. So in the end it all worked out but she still had the one little problem of how to remove the cat odor that was already inside her apartment. In my next post I’ll tell you exactly how you can get rid of cat odor using home made remedies that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
